What Death shows
A skeleton in armour rides a white horse carrying a black flag with a white rose. A king lies fallen, while a child and a woman face him. In the distance, the sun rises between two towers. Change comes to everyone, and the rising sun shows renewal after the ending.
Death upright meaning
Upright, Death marks a clear ending: a relationship, job, habit, belief or identity that has run its course. It can feel uncomfortable, but it clears the ground. The card asks you to let go fully rather than half-heartedly, so that the next phase has room to arrive.
Death reversed meaning
Reversed, you may be clinging to something that has already ended, fearing change, or repeating an old pattern because it feels safer. The longer the ending is resisted, the harder it becomes. Ask what you are afraid of losing.
Death in love and relationships
Upright: A relationship may end or transform completely into something new. For singles, closing the door on a past love.
Reversed: Holding on to a relationship that is over, or fear of moving on.
Death in career and money
Upright: A job or role ends, or a major restructuring. Make space for a new direction.
Reversed: Staying in a dead-end situation out of fear. Plan your transition.
Is Death a yes or no card?
No. Usually no to continuing as things are; yes to a fresh start after the ending.
Yes-or-no readings flatten a card into one word. If the question matters, a short spread that shows the context around Death will tell you more than the verdict alone.
A question to carry with you
What am I ready to let end, and what might arrive once it does?
