What The Devil shows
A horned figure crouches on a pedestal above a naked man and woman chained to it. Their chains are loose enough to lift off. The card is about bondage that is partly voluntary: habits, desires or fears that keep us stuck.
The Devil upright meaning
Upright, The Devil points to something that has a hold on you: an addiction, a toxic relationship, money worries, materialism or a belief that limits you. The first step is admitting the pattern exists. The chains in the image are loose; awareness is how you begin to remove them.
The Devil reversed meaning
Reversed, you are beginning to break free: noticing an unhealthy pattern, setting a boundary or reclaiming power. It can also show facing your shadow side honestly. Keep going; relapse is possible, but awareness is already change.
The Devil in love and relationships
Upright: Intense attraction, obsession, codependency or a relationship that feels hard to leave. Ask whether passion is masking control.
Reversed: Breaking free from a toxic dynamic or reclaiming independence.
The Devil in career and money
Upright: Feeling trapped by money, a job you dislike or unhealthy work habits. Look at what really holds you there.
Reversed: Leaving a bad job or changing an unhealthy work pattern.
Is The Devil a yes or no card?
No. No if it deepens dependence; reconsider what is really driving the question.
Yes-or-no readings flatten a card into one word. If the question matters, a short spread that shows the context around The Devil will tell you more than the verdict alone.
A question to carry with you
What am I telling myself I cannot leave, and is that actually true?
